Visserijbedrijf Piet Ruijter

Fishing company Piet Ruijter is operated by Amsterdam's last remaining professional fisherman. In collaboration with city ecologist Martin Melchers, Piet Ruijter provides small-scale excursions throughout the port area. They show participants how nature and industry co-exist. They sail to fishing nets and haul them in. Upon request, Piet prepares part of the catch for consumption. Every caught fish, mostly eels and pike-perches, is accurately registered for research purposes.

Piet Ruijter has been fishing in the Amsterdam waters since the age of 15. Like no other, he has seen the port area change to what it is today. The fisherman has a barn on the Westerdok, where he repairs and stores his nets.
