Synvina specializes in research and development of sustainable bioplastics. During the production process, vegetable sugars are converted into chemical components. A crucial component is furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which is used in the production of polyester of polymer polyethylene furanoate (PEF). PEF can be used in packaging materials.
Compared to conventional polyesters such as PET, Synvina’s products are firmer and less permeable to oxygen, carbon dioxide and water. Moreover, they are more environmentally friendly, because they are not based on petroleum.

Synvina is a joint venture of BASF and the Amsterdam chemical technology company Avantium. It was established late 2016. Its production plant will be located in Antwerp.
