Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is situated in close proximity to Port of Amsterdam. Holland’s main international airport is one of Europe's largest hubs for full-freighter services and passenger services. More than one hundred airlines fly to and from Schiphol on a regular schedule. Every year, roughly 70 million passengers use the airport for service to of from some 330 direct destinations worldwide. The cargo volume amounts to almost 2 million tons annually. The number of commercial air transport movements amounts to half a million a year. They include both cargo and passenger flights.
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport started as a military airstrip in 1916 and has been opened to civil aviation since 1920. Both the airport grounds and its immediate vicinity are home to a variety of commercial activities, including warehousing, transport and catering. In addition, many internationally-oriented companies are located in or near Schiphol.
