UPDATE: Salinisation overview for 13 September 2024
Z5 value and clarification
The Z5 value in the North Sea Canal is currently 3480 mg/l which is about the same as last week.
The discharge Weesp (Q5) is currently 38 m3/s. The discharge Lobith (QLobith) is about 1504 m3/s. The water intake system (WIS) is 0 m3/s.
Expectations
The z5 value increased slightly but is decreasing again due the heavy rainfall of the previous days. Also because of the rainfall, the WIS is 0 m3/s at the moment.
For the next four weeks there will be a ‘spui’ restriction at IJmuiden between 07:00 am and 07:00 pm. This restriction applies as long as the level can remain sufficiently controlled.
Measures
Because the Z5 value is still around the 3500 mg/l and there is a 'spui' restriction the coming weeks, we will continue with optimised lock passages.
We will continue to cluster ships and minimise empty-running. We will accept certain delay, approximately two hours, to make the passages as efficient as possible and minimize the intrusion of salt in the North Sea Canal.
The CNB and the RWS-WNN will have a meeting on Monday 16 September regarding the salt intrusion and how to best monitor the situation. We will be sending the view on salinisation every week, with the next update coming on Friday 20 September.
