UPDATE: This is the salinisation overview for 30 August 2024

Z5 value and clarification
The Z5 value in the North Sea Canal is currently 3445 mg/l and has increased slightly compared to last week.

The discharge Weesp (Q5) is currently 35.9 m3/s. The water intake system (WIS) is 55. The discharge Lobith (QLobith) is about 1399 m3/s.

Expectations
The WIS is operated at maximum capacity to increase water inflow. The work for the ‘selectieve onttrekking’ is still taking place and the forecast for the coming period is that it will remain dry.

Measures
Because the Z5 value is still near the 3500 mg/l, we will continue with optimised lock passages.

An expansion of the maximum allowable dimensions (vessels up to 180 meters) is currently in force for the 'Middensluis', but, due to the state of maintenance of this lock, this expansion will be rescinded. This is expected to have little to no impact on the passage of the ships.

We will continue to cluster ships and minimise empty-running. We will accept certain delay, approximately two hours, to make the passages as efficient as possible and minimize the intrusion of salt in the North Sea Canal.

The CNB and the RWS-WNN will have a meeting on Monday 2 September regarding the salt intrusion and how to best monitor the situation. We will be sending the view on salinisation every week, with the next update coming on Friday 6 September.
